Recently of last night when playing with my boxer puppy who is close to 8 month old I noticed that she had small bumps on her face by her whiskers.. when i was looking for closely underneath on the bottom part of her mouth close to her mouth she had a huge bump that looked painful. When I was squeezing it (of course that is the worse thing to do I know) it popped and blood/puss came out and to top it off the smell was horrific. I put peroxide on it afterwards but I noticed that her chin is very rough and has bumps as well. I have changed her water dish previously to stainless steel because her chin was pretty red when we had plastic, but now not sure if dogs can get acne. I have been putting peroxide on her chin where the bumps are to see if I can clean anything out. Is this normal? Is there a better way to remove these from her chin? Do I need to bring her to the vet?
Yep, you've diagnosed correctly, congrats! Vets will call it furunculosis (a deep follicle infection), but no need to go to the vet. you will need to disinfect her chin regularly to clear up existing pimples, as well as to prevent new ones from forming. Many times dogs infect their chins from constant contact of dirty surfaces (floors, tug toys, bowls, etc). Using dilute Betadine or hydrogen peroxide daily will dramatically reduce breakouts.
