Dr. Becker's Comments:
Those of you who read here regularly and view my videos know I’m a stickler for good oral hygiene and caring for your pet’s mouth. That’s easier said than done a lot of the time, as I’m sure many of you would agree!
Most knowledgeable pet owners know feeding your dog dry food doesn’t clean her teeth any more effectively than eating granola cleans your own. Also, the myth that dog treats like milk bones clean teeth is just that, a huge myth perpetuated by pet food companies looking for huge profits. The only way your dog’s teeth get cleaned is through mechanical abrasion – a fancy term for the shearing action that occurs when your dog grinds his teeth against raw bone. That’s one of the many incredible benefits of a raw food diet. Eating raw helps reduce the amount of plaque and tartar buildup on your pet’s teeth. The other method is, of course, brushing your dog’s teeth daily or several times a week.

Your dog enjoys chewing almost as much as eating, so supplying her with safe, organic chew toys is an excellent way to encourage her urge to gnaw on something while helping to manually remove plaque and tartar from her teeth. Unfortunately, finding a safe, organic chew toy or bone can be challenging. There are tens of thousands of products on the market, but many of them contain unhealthy ingredients and/or pose safety concerns.

One safety concern among veterinarians is whether the item designed to be chewed is digestible. Many dog bones on the market aren’t highly digestible – they can’t be absorbed or assimilated well by your dog’s body. This could result in a partial or complete blockage of your pet’s gastrointestinal tract. The second concern with the majority of dog bones is related to the quality of ingredients. Most dog owners give chew bones to their pets on a consistent basis – often daily. When something goes into your dog’s mouth every, or almost every day, you want it to be as healthy as it can be. Remember, all foods either heal or harm. So on a daily basis, you want to provide your dog’s body with healing foods and treats, as well as chew toys and bones. Traditional dog snacks and treats contain unnatural additives, preservatives, synthetic ingredients, and FD&C dyes and colors. Even some of the green bones are not naturally preserved – synthetic coloring is used to give them their green color. It’s also important to avoid products with allergenic ingredients. Many of these bones contain salt, sugar, added glutens, soy and wheat – all known allergens for dogs. Anything you feed your pet regularly shouldn’t contain ingredients that can bring on allergic responses.

A special benefit of the new, softer bone is an added ingredient – cinnamon. Cinnamon not only helps alleviate puppy and dog breath, it is also a time-honored natural remedy for toothaches. In the Gentle Dental Bone, cinnamon does double duty as a breath freshener and pain reliever. The Mercola Gentle Dental Bone comes in two sizes, small and large, to accommodate toy breeds right through giant breed dogs. This new bone is an excellent choice for puppies and adult dogs with a soft mouth or tooth or gum challenges. Traditional hard bones cause irritation and inflammation in the mouths of these dogs. Now they have a soft, pliable bone designed just for them!
