The European Pet Food Industry Federation has put together some really excellent materials to teach school-age kids how to responsibly handle their pets, using their acquired knowledge of the biology, behavior and language of dogs and cats. According to the Federation, "Knowing how [pets] behave and express themselves is essential in establishing a 'species-appropriate' relationship between humans and all animals".
