The 6 Traits of Responsible Pet Owners: Do You Have Them All?
February 19, 2014
February is Responsible Pet Owners Month. Owning a pet is a privilege, but the benefits of pet ownership come with responsibilities.
A responsible pet owner commits to the relationship for the life of the pet; recognizes that pet ownership requires an investment of time and money; obeys local laws and ordinances regarding keeping a pet; insures the pet can be identified by an up-to-date tag, tattoo or microchip; does not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem; and provides for the pet in the event of an emergency, disaster, or if the owner can no longer care for the pet.
Responsible owners also recognize a decline in their pet’s quality of life and make decisions in consultation with a veterinarian regarding appropriate end-of-life care (e.g., palliative care, hospice, euthanasia).
