Guinea pigs, or “cavies,” are short-tailed, rough-haired South American rodents. They can make great pets for people looking for a small companion to care for.
Cavies are tailless. They weigh between 1.5 and 3 pounds as adults, and range in size from 8 to 10 inches. The average lifespan is 4 to 5 years.
Guinea pigs are social creatures and require the company of other guinea pigs. They need spacious habitats equipped with hiding and napping places, things to climb on, safe wood to chew and guinea pig toys.
Cavies are outgoing animals with a range of different sounds and a playful spirit.
Guinea pigs recognize, respond to, and bond with their humans.
