Amazon parrots are one of the larger and more popular birds kept as pets. They can grow up to 20 inches in length, beak to tail feathers, and weigh up to a pound and a half (680 grams). Amazons need big cages – the bigger, the better – and plenty of room to fly, play and exercise.
There are many species of Amazon, but the most popular as pets are the blue-fronted Amazon, the double yellow-headed Amazon, and the yellow-naped Amazon.
Some species of Amazon are good talkers, while all are vocal and can be quite noisy.
Amazons need lots of affection from their humans, and plenty of interaction and exercise. They are entertaining and playful, but they can also be moody and even aggressive.
Amazons do best in homes with experienced bird owners who understand and are prepared to meet their extensive needs.
