Safer Ways to Keep Fleas and Ticks Off Your Pet

The pests you see on your pet are often only a fraction of what is developing in carpets, bedding, floor cracks, and shaded areas of the yard. Treating your pet alone may bring temporary relief while the infestation continues around them.

A more effective approach addresses both your pet and their environment. The goal is to reduce exposure without adding more chemical burden than the situation calls for. Chemical preventives may still be appropriate if flea activity is high or tick exposure is frequent, but they should be chosen carefully and used with a clear reason, not simply because the calendar says it is time for another dose.

Fleas and Ticks Require Different Prevention Strategies

Fleas and ticks often get grouped together on the same product label, but they are very different parasites with different risks, and managing them well means understanding what each one actually does.

Fleas feed on blood and most commonly cause itching and skin irritation. They can also transmit tapeworms, and a heavy infestation may cause anemia in very young animals. The risk is greater in pets with flea allergy dermatitis, whose immune systems react to proteins in flea saliva. Just one or two bites can trigger severe itching that lasts for weeks.1

Ticks also feed on blood, but they pose a greater risk of transmitting disease because they attach and feed for days at a time across a wide range of hosts. Lyme disease is the most familiar, but the list also includes anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and a single tick may carry more than one disease-causing organism.2

The safest plan is one matched to your pet's real exposure rather than a blanket year-round schedule applied the same way to every animal. Several factors influence this, including:3

  • Whether flea and tick activity is seasonal or year-round where you live
  • How common tick-borne disease is in your region
  • How much time they spend outdoors and in what kind of terrain
  • Exposure to wooded trails, tall grass, brush, wildlife, kennels, or other animals
  • History of flea allergy dermatitis or frequent tick bites
  • Your pet's species, size, age, health status, and current medications

Check Your Pet Regularly for Fleas and Ticks

Once you understand your pet's risk, regular inspection becomes one of the most useful parts of prevention. Whether you choose a natural or chemical flea or tick preventive, these checks remain important. No product catches every parasite, and finding fleas or ticks early can keep a small problem from becoming harder to control. During flea season:4

  • Run a flea comb slowly through your pet's coat, especially around the neck, belly, and base of the tail.
  • Comb over a light-colored towel so fleas and debris are easier to spot.
  • Drop anything caught in the comb into a bowl of soapy water.
  • Check dark specks for flea dirt by placing them on a damp white tissue. A rusty red stain indicates digested blood and confirms that fleas are present.
  • Bathe and brush your pet regularly to remove fleas and make skin irritation easier to notice.

After outdoor activity in areas where ticks are active:5

  • Run your hands slowly over your pet's entire body, feeling for small bumps attached to the skin.
  • Part the fur in any suspicious area and look for a tick, which may appear flat and tiny when newly attached or rounder and swollen after feeding.
  • Check the ears and the skin around them, under the collar, around the eyes and muzzle, beneath the front legs, around the groin, between the toes, and near the base of the tail.
  • Pay extra attention after walks through tall grass, brush, or wooded areas.
  • Remove any tick you find promptly using a proper tick-removal tool.

How to Prevent and Control Fleas

Understanding why fleas are so persistent starts with their life cycle. A flea goes through four stages — egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Only the adults live on your pet. The eggs fall off into carpet fibers, bedding, upholstery, and soil, where the larval and pupal stages develop out of sight. Controlling your pet's environment is what breaks the cycle. Inside your home:6,7

  • Vacuum carpets, rugs, upholstery, baseboards, floor cracks, and the areas where your pet spends the most time.
  • Wash pet bedding and other washable fabrics regularly in hot water.
  • Empty the vacuum bag or canister immediately after cleaning.
  • Repeat these steps consistently, since newly emerging fleas may continue to appear after the adults are gone.
  • Use food-grade diatomaceous earth cautiously, keeping the dust out of the air and away from your pet's face.

Fleas and their larvae thrive in shaded, damp areas, so the goal outdoors is to take away the conditions they depend on:8,9

  • Keep grass trimmed and remove leaf litter, brush, and debris.
  • Prune dense shrubs to increase sunlight and airflow.
  • Use cedar mulch or chips around outdoor resting areas where appropriate.
  • Consider beneficial nematodes to help reduce flea larvae in the soil.

Reducing Your Pet's Tick Exposure

Tick prevention starts with limiting contact with the places where ticks wait for a host. They often position themselves on the tips of tall grass and low vegetation with their front legs extended — a behavior called questing — then latch onto an animal that brushes past.10 They tend to gather most heavily along transition zones, such as where a lawn meets the woods, or a field borders a tree line.

When tick activity is high, staying on cleared trails and open ground can help reduce exposure, as can limiting wildlife access to the areas your pet uses most. If you find an attached tick during a check, prompt removal matters. Here are tips to keep in mind:11

  • Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool and grip the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  • Pull straight out with steady, even pressure. Do not twist, crush, or squeeze the body.
  • Do not try to burn the tick off or smother it with petroleum jelly, as these can cause it to release more saliva into the wound.
  • Clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
  • If the mouthparts break off and remain in the skin, try to remove them, but if that is not easily done, leave them alone and let the skin heal.
  • Contact your veterinarian if the area becomes red, swollen, or inflamed in the days that follow.

Pets living in tick-endemic areas or experiencing repeated tick bites may benefit from broader screening for tick-borne pathogens. Your veterinarian can recommend the appropriate tests and frequency based on local disease patterns and your pet's exposure.

Make Your Own Natural Flea and Tick Spray

Natural repellents can add another layer of protection against fleas and ticks. Pet-formulated cedar products, neem-based sprays, and apple cider vinegar (ACV) sprays may help make pets less appealing to parasites. You can also make a simple deterrent spray at home:

  • For dogs — Mix 8 ounces of pure water, 4 ounces of organic, unfiltered ACV, and 10 drops of neem oil. If they spend time in tick-prone areas, add 5 drops of lemon, lemongrass, eucalyptus, or geranium essential oil.
  • For cats — Mix 8 ounces of pure water, 4 ounces of organic, unfiltered ACV, 10 drops of neem oil, and 10 drops of catnip oil.

Store the mixture in the refrigerator and shake well before use. Mist your pet before they go outdoors, avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth, and reapply as needed and as tolerated, especially during extended outdoor time. Check with your veterinarian before using any topical spray on puppies, kittens, pregnant animals, or pets with respiratory conditions or sensitive skin.

Cats also require particular caution because they groom frequently and may ingest anything applied to their coat. They are also highly sensitive to many essential oils. Keep true essential oils out of homemade cat preparations unless your veterinarian has confirmed that the ingredient and concentration are appropriate.

Why Chemical Pest Prevention Deserves Caution

Chemical flea and tick products are often treated as the default, even when a pet's exposure is low or seasonal. These products may cause skin irritation and, when misused or poorly tolerated, neurologic reactions such as weakness, tremors, or seizures.12 They also do not guarantee complete protection, particularly as some tick populations become less responsive to pesticides.13

Use chemical preventives only when your pet's parasite or disease risk clearly justifies the added exposure. In regions with freezing winters, that may mean stopping treatment during months when flea and tick activity falls sharply rather than continuing automatically year-round. When a chemical product is necessary:

  • Follow the label's species, weight, and dosing directions. Be especially careful with small dogs, and never apply a dog product to a cat.
  • Watch your pet closely for adverse reactions after application, particularly the first time a product is used.
  • Do not rely on chemicals alone. Continue environmental control, grooming, and nontoxic deterrents, and work with your veterinarian to limit chemical applications to the periods when your pet's exposure warrants them.
  • Ask an integrative veterinarian whether additional liver support is appropriate after chemical exposure. In a review of milk thistle use in companion animals, silymarin was reported to have antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties in dogs and cats, associated with liver function support during drug treatment.14

    In animal studies, chlorella has been observed to reduce the accumulation of certain toxic compounds in the liver by binding them and limiting their absorption,15 and to lower oxidative stress by restoring cellular redox balance and normalizing elevated liver enzymes.16

Pay attention to when and where their exposure changes, keep up with regular checks, and adjust your approach as needed. The more closely prevention matches your pet's actual risk, the easier it becomes to protect them during flea and tick season without exposing them to potentially harmful chemicals.
